Social Groups & Intercultural Events

TIRC provides many social events and groups to allow integration over food, music, sport, or just conversation. These groups and events are core to our vision of an inclusive community.

Womens Group

The Womens Group is an integrated group that is open to other women in the local community. It takes part in a variety of projects, such as: ‘Meet and Chat’ coffee mornings; Arts & Crafts sessions; and cooking classes run by members who share their different skills. These meetings have been very beneficial to all participants as they share skills, information and cultures.

International Friends Group

TIRC’s International Friends group meets every second Thursday evening and is a social space for the men living in the Direct Provision (DP) centres in Tralee.

This welcoming environment offers opportunities to socialise, play games, and enjoy themed cooking nights, such as Somali and Algerian evenings. The Development Worker collaborates with NEWKD to organise engaging outings like bowling and paint balling, while also promoting healthy lifestyles through activities like boxing and soccer classes. These activities not only provide much-needed recreation but also support a sense of community and belonging. The favourite activity of the group is cooking!

Social Tennis

In conjunction with the Tralee Tennis Club, there is a social tennis group every Monday morning. TIRC service users meet up at the club where they can play on two courts reserved for them.

The group is mixed, with many nationalities, and gives people who otherwise would not have the opportunity a chance to meet and play tennis together.

Africa Day

TIRC annually partners with the African Community in Kerry and Killarney Migrant Support Centre (KASI) to host an Africa Day celebration in the Tralee town park each May 25.

Funded by Irish Aid in the Department of Foreign Affairs, and supported by Kerry County Council, the event features a variety of wonderful African dishes as well as performances of traditional and contemporary African music. This has become a regular on the events calendar, and is a wonderful, colourful day and a great intercultural event.

World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day takes place annually on June 20, and TIRC marks the day in a variety of ways, be it a workshop, training, or a Coffee morning that brings people together. We build our celebrations around the theme of the day, which varies each year.

Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is marked every year on December 10.

At TIRC we hold a discussion in our English classes on the Universal Human Rights of all people and hand out a list of the rights to all our callers. We also promote Human Rights Day on our social media.

st-patricks-day

St. Patrick's Day

Every year TIRC participates in the Tralee St Patrick’s Day parade.

This is a wonderful opportunity for all the different nationalities who use our centre to be part of this important Irish event. It is a wonderful day of intercultural sharing and fun!

President Higgins at the Celebration of Africa Day

tirc-president-visit-2012

A Dhaoine Uaisle,

It gives me great pleasure to be with you today to officially open 'The Many Faces of Africa' event which has been organised by Tralee International Resource Centre as part of the Africa Day festivities. I'm told that this is not the first time you have organised an event to mark Africa Day and I commend you for all your hard work in making this special day possible.
Africa Day celebrates African diversity and success and highlights the cultural and economic potential that exists on the African continent. It also serves to raise awareness and understanding of development issues in Africa.

TIRC's work has seen the organisation gain the attention of President Higgins, who visited the centre for its Africa Day celebrations in May 2012. For more information, click here.
